Prices & Previously Given Seminars, Clinics,& Presentations

Thank you for taking the time and coming this far to research my prices and reference list.  I can understand you taking the time to make sure you would be getting a quality speaker for your club or function.  First let me try to impress you with a short biography.

I was born in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. My family moved to Indiana where I started fly fishing at the age of seven for bass and sunfish. I moved back to Arkansas after a stint in the U.S. Navy and started fly fishing for trout in the Spring River. I attended college at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro where I received a BSE in Mathematics with minors in Physical Science, Computer Science and Chemistry. I started flyfishing the White and North Fork Rivers in the early 70’s. I took a teaching position in Mountain Home in the late 70’s and started guiding fly fishermen in October, 1979.

Some accomplishments:

I developed the Arkansas Dead-Drift technique, the standard nymphing technique for flyfishing in the White, Cumberland, Caney Fork, Hiwassee river systems and several others.

Authored the column, “Fishing on the Fly”, that appeared in several area newspapers in the 80’s.

Pioneered ultra-light fly fishing techniques - caught a 15 pound 6 ounce Brown Trout on 8X tippet.

Pioneered high-water flyfishing with the help of small group of guides on the White River system.

The first flyfishing guide to successfully fly fish high-water on the White River system.

I developed high-water shad kill and high-water egg flyfishing techniques on the White River system.

In December 1989 I broke the existing 4 pound class line record five time in one hour using 8x tippet--I refused to kill a fish to set a new record.

Authored the book, "Fishin’ What They See, Anatomically Correct Minnow Patterns for All Anglers".

Produced the River-Bottom Colored Tying DVD.

Have been a fly fisherman for 54 years.

Have been a fly tier for over 34 years.

Was a fly fishing guide on the White River System for over 26 years.

Authored several articles that appeared on the internet, magazines, newsletters and various other publications.

Thought to be the first fly fisherman to ever use a modern floating indicator.

Have caught numerous trophy trout , bass, sunfish, and other species, the heaviest of which was a 54 inch Israel Carp out of Crown Lake in Arkansas which calculated at over 60 pounds, and the longest of which was a 78 inch Longnose Gar caught out of Bull Shoals Lake. I have caught 14 Brown trout over 20 pounds, 5 Rainbow trout over 12 pounds, 3 cutthroat over 6 pounds, 3 Brook trout over 3 pounds, a Chum Salmon over 32 pounds, a couple hundred Largemouth Bass over 8 pounds, almost that many Spotted Bass over 6 pounds, and 7 Smallmouth Bass over 6 pounds.

I may be the only fly fishermen to catch and recognize that I caught the rarest bass in Arkansas, Micropterus coosae (Redeye Bass).

Throughout my years of fly fishing not only have I taught my clients how to catch more fish but I have taught several guides how to catch more fish and how be better guides. The list of guides include Jim Lipscomb, Bobby Snyder, Tommy Rodgers, Dave Lewis, Darrel DePriest, Pete Del Rio, Jamie Rouse, Marc Poulos and a few others. Now there are third and fourth generation guides from my teachings and help to others.

My favorite species to fly fish for are #1-Shadow Bass, #2-Smallmouth Bass, #3-Spotted Bass, #4-Largemouth Bass, #5-Sunfish, #6-Trout (in that order). My favorite areas to fish are pristine Ozark creek, streams, and rivers.

Presently, I own Willow Ford in Salem, Arkansas - an online outdoor store that sells boats, fishing equipment, flies, and fly tying materials.  I am semi-retired from teaching and spend my time writing articles, designing flies, and fishing my pristine Ozark creeks, streams, and rivers.  In 2007, I was invited to design a 9 foot 6 inch 3 weight nymphing rod for a rod company.  I personally build "Innovative Custom Fly Fishing Instruments" that are unique rods for someone that wants the utmost sensitivity and distance from a full flex rod.  In October of 2007 I went on an eight day fishing adventure in British Columbia.  I was fortunate enough to catch over 250 Chum Salmon from 12 to 32 pounds using a couple of my new HPU patterns.

Flies that I have designed:

Dead-Drifter Sowbugs patterns that are used in the entire White River system in Arkansas and Missouri, the Cumberland River, Caney Fork and Hiwassee Rivers in Tennessee and Kentucky, also used in the Little Big Horn River and the Madison River.

Arkansas Scud patterns for the White River system in Arkansas and Missouri, also used in the upper Platte and several other rivers.

Door-Knob Egg pattern that has caught hundreds of trophy trout, both browns and rainbows in the White River System .

Gimp-Feather Crawfish patterns for trout, smallmouth, and sunfish.

Over 347 Anatomically Correct Minnow patterns of the Mississippi, Great Lakes and Atlantic Drainage systems.

Right-Side Up Sculpin patterns that caught a 27 pound Brown Trout at Bull Shoals State Park, August 19, 1991 about one o’clock in the afternoon.

Worm Scud pattern that is a one minute nymph that has caught trophy trout for Argentina to northern Canada.

KFC Dry-Emerger patterns are one minute midges that can be fished wet or dry, either way it is a great producer.

Planarians patterns, these flat worms are in most rivers and this simple one minute imitation is a great producer.

Oligochaete Worm patterns (one of the first individuals to document and explain the real aquatic worm’s behavior of coiling up when free floating in the current or open water).

Fox’s Mudbugs patterns for flyfishing and ice fishing. In Minnesota, the ice fisherman that use it call it the "crawjig"

Sand Eel patterns for saltwater flyfishing.

Statler's Streakers designed for Striper fishing

Willow Cats, minnow patterns for flyfishing and ice fishing. These patterns imitate small catfish.

Whiskered Worm patterns for Bass and Walleye flyfishing and spin fishing.

River Bottom Colored Sculpin patterns, featured in the March 2004 issue of Fly Fisherman Magazine.

Spinner’d Minners are one of the greatest flies that I have ever cast for big fish. This fly won a Musky fishing tournament in Michigan.

HPU Brite-Eyed Shiners is great producer of any species of big fish; salmon, steelhead, bass, trout, or saltwater.

HPU Willow Worms are a bass producing machine.

HPU Willow Snakes is a weedless bass pattern that can be tied for topwater, slow-descent or bottom bouncing. No matter where it is fished it catches them.

HPU Topminnows are a weedless topwater fly that can be tied small enough for trout or large enough for tarpon. This minnow pattern can be tied in the dead position (belly up) or live position (belly down).  Few anglers have experienced fishing dead minnow patterns and their effectiveness.

HPU Beetles are another weedless topwater fly that can be tied in sizes for trout or bass.

HPU Grasshoppers a great weedless topwater bass and trout fly that is easy to tie and a great producer of fish.

HPU Dazl-Eyed Shiners can be tied less than one inch long with a small 3/32 inch hourglass eye and catch trout and sunfish better than a seine.

Standup Fligs (fly-jigs) can be tied as nymphs, minnows, worms, and any other aquatics. Their unique construction always gives them a horizontal posture and they stand up with their tails high even out of the water.

Spinner'd Minner Lites for Ultra-light flyfishing are very compact spinners that are light enough to be cast by a one or two weight.

Their are several other HPU style patterns I just haven't had the time to test them or name them.

The price for me to come to your function or meeting

I charge $500 per day plus travel expenses.  If I have to drive to your location, I require 32 cents a mile and you provide my lodging.  If the lodging is at some club member's home - that is fine.  I will work the entire day that you are paying me for.  For example, if you want me to do an on-stream clinic or tying demonstration in the morning and a seminar to your club that evening - that is okay.  If you want to charge the participants of the clinic or tying demonstration so that your club or association recovers some of the expense of having me there - that is up to you.  I am very flexible and willing to work with you and your club to make it possible for me to attend your meeting or function.  Below is information on how to contact me.
