drainages, in the Mississippi and Ohio drainage north to Minnesota to
Wisconsin, south to the Gulf Slope from the Escambia River in Florida west
to the Pearl River in Louisiana.
Habitat: Lives above the Fall Line in the swifter water of medium to large
rivers, only found in small streams during the spawning season.
Spawning Period: April in water 70-76 degrees.
Spawning Habitat: A slight depression in a gravel-bottomed riffle.
Important Notes: Redhorse can be caught on hook-n-line using mussel flesh
for bait. The young are beautiful minnows with the silver and white sides
with brilliant red fins, a favorite pattern for me in the larger Ozark
streams and rivers for Smallmouth.
