Distribution: Found quite commonly in the southern Great Lakes drainage and the Mississippi Basin then westward to Galveston Bay drainage of Texas.
Habitat: This is generally a coastal plains or fall line minnow preferring the backwaters of upland streams and pools of low gradient streams and rivers lined with Water Willows.
Spawning Period: An extended spawning period from mid May to late August.
Spawning Habitat: Preferring to deposit its eggs over the beds of Green Sunfishes, but Orangespotted and Longeared Sunfishes are also used.
Important Notes: This minnow is found in the association with Water Willows along the bank of the water. During the spawning period, they move to sunfish's beds which are more often in small niches just out of the current. This is mainly a sight-feeding surface feeder. Both sexes make noises when spawning.
