Distribution: Widely distributed throughout the central United States,
throughout the Mississippi Basin, westward to the Rio Panuco, Mexico and the
Colorado River, northward to South Dakota and southern Wisconsin. Disjunct
population in central North Carolina.
Habitat: Prefers sand to gravel runs and riffles in small to medium rivers.
Spawning Period: March thru September.
Spawning Habitat: Spawns over Green Sunfish beds.
Important Notes: Both sexes make sounds or calls during courtship, the
female calls and the male responds. Good aquarium fish.
