Distribution: Found in the upland Ozarks of Arkansas and Missouri the
northeastward to the Mississippi river and its tributaries of southern to
mid Illinois, then a disjunct population in the Mississippi and its
tributaries in Iowa and northern Illinois north to the southern tip of
Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Habitat: Small to large, clear streams and rivers over gravel to bedrock
bottoms preferring pools with current.
Spawning Period: Mid April thru July in water 62-64 degrees.
Spawning Habitat: Spawning occurs in shallow water over fine gravel, often
several hundred spawn in the same area.
Important Notes: Both Males and Females have breeding colors. A great
minnow to fish on the sunny side of the river because of its light colors.">
