Tying Notes: None
Distribution: Inhabitants the Great Lakes, Missouri, Ohio, and Mississippi
drainages. Also in the Mobil basin above the Fall Line, and the Roanoke and
James rivers in the Atlantic drainage.
Habitat: Prefers cool, clear, large streams and small rivers, it may be found in
large rivers as well, unlike the Black Redhorse. Golden Redhorse prefer warm and slower
waters than Blacks also.
Spawning Period: Spring when water temperatures are 61-70 degrees.
Spawning Habitat: Occurs in slower and shallower water than Blacks, often so
shallow that their back are out of the water.
Important Notes: The total pounds of Golden and Black Redhorse in many Ozark
streams is greater than all other large fish combined. The Golden Redhorse
imitation in sizes of 1 to 5-inches is my absolute favorite pattern for
Smallmouth Bass.
